Design thinking and user experience is not just about the front end design and interaction with user. Its much more than that. In this article lets get some flash back of the evolution of the design process through the pages of the history.

In today’s world the life has become very easy or rather, the technology has made us all very lazy. The automation of different tasks in life has brought everything on our finger tips. Our behavior has been changed after the introduction of internet in our lives. After its introduction to the public in early 1990’s, people has realized that this is a great source of communication. Then web development has became and industry. This industry like any other industry has gone through different phases to evolve itself, but just because of communication on massive scale, the pace of evolution was quite fast. From comfort of you home now you can do any task without any hesitation. In less than 30 years time the world had started believing in internet. This can be seen by success of websites like amazon and ebay.

If we look at the start of the web development it was all about putting some clean text with some background colors or images. This was the beginning of design thinking. From the very first day every person who want to have presence on the internet has started to think about that how they can stand out of the other competitors.

In the image on the left we can see the difference between design of today vs the design of early 90's.On the very early stages of the web development, the website were designed keeping in view the constraints of Internet speed, Space, Information. The basic purpose was to provide information to the user as much as you can. In very early stages the HTML was also not that supportive in terms of designing the website more efficiently. The structure of the website and any other thought process from today's development was completely irrelevant.

As the time passes the things started to improve. The technology was more supportive. The speed and the bandwidth of the internet has also improved and people started to think about presenting the information in a better and attractive way. Now web designers started adding GIF’s JPEG and other sort of images. These made the design of the websites more interactive and user friendly. In early 2000 with the integration of flash and videos in the web technologies, the design of the websites have changed again. Now everybody could add the very flashy Macromedia flash based promos or videos about their website.

In this time the designers had start using the frames to structure the websites in a better way. This also help them designing a consistent layout throughout the entire website. We also have to keep in mind that web design has now been bigger in size. In the beginning due to shortage of space or probably the getting a space on the web was expensive the websites use to have very less pages. Due to which providing information was also not easy. But in early 2000s the web space become available to everyone and on very reasonable amount of money.

In order to provide more flexibility to the designer in 1997 the CSS has been introduced. With the help of CSS the layout of the complete website become more consistent which give the customer a better feel.

So far we have talked about the design and user experience on the web only. Launch of smart phones was again a paradigm shift in terms of design thinking. Now the whole internet from laptops and desktops has moved to your palm. This revolution forces the design thinkers to re-initiate the design process.
